HISTORY OF THE NEW BRUNSWICK REGIONAL COUNCIL
OF CARPENTERS, MILLWRIGHTS AND ALLIED WORKERS
The New Brunswick Regional Council was formed in April 1998. At this time, General Office merged all of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America's Locals in the Province to form one Regional Council. This merger brought the locals together making the Brotherhood stronger than ever before.
In the beginning the Locals that formed the our Council were:
Local 840 Ship Building Saint John
Local 1386 Carpenters and Shops
Local 1458 Millwrights North
Local 2262 Millwrights South
Local 2450 Fraser Papers (Plaster Rock)
Local 2716 Peat Moss Company
Local 2717 Peat Moss Company
Local 2821 Fafard Peat Moss
There have been a few changes since then, Local 1458 has merged with local 2262 to form one millwright local, and local 840 has merged with local 1386 to form one Carpenter local.
A new local was formed in 2006, UBC Local 911. This proud new addition to the Council is the Fredericton Police Force.
Even as a part of the Regional Council each local has kept its own identity. Each Local has their own Executive, Bylaws and regular membership meetings. Each Local elects a delegate(s) to attend the bi- annual delegate meetings for the Regional Council. The number of delegates elected is based on the number of members in the Local . Delegate meetings are held to inform the delegates of new events. These are information meetings and the delegate will take an update back to the membership regarding the Council activities. They are informed about finances, organizing and all Local activities. At the Delegate meetings elections are held every four years for an Executive Committee. This committee meets quarterly to discuss matters such as finances of the Council , organizing ,and upcoming events. Each officer of the committee gives a report on their local and each Local Union is represented on the Executive Committee.
The New Brunswick Regional Council of Carpenters, Millwrights and Allied Workers head office is located in Fredericton at 277 Main Street, Suite 201. When the Council was formed its membership total was almost 2100. Today we have nearly 3100 members which does not include the 400 members who have transferred their membership to other provinces. Our Council not only includes construction and millwright workers it also consists of shop members which includes Police Officers, Loggers, Peat Moss Workers, Lumber Mill workers, Ferry Transit workers, Custom Cabinet Workers, Grocery Store workers, and Casket Company workers. Our brotherhood continues to grow everyday.
Organizing is the number one priority of the Council and its employees. With Organizing we can provide more work , benefits and higher wages for our members. The organizers on staff with the Regional Council are making a difference in providing work for our members and increasing our membership..
